"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:5-7 NIV
God is Light and Light was the very first of God’s creation (Gen 1:3-5, 16). Light speaks of the purity of Christ and the holiness He possesses. Light is essential for life to exist. Just as Christ is the Living Word, He is also the Light of the World. The word light personifies God. Light originated from the mouth of God because He said, let there be. Your mouth is the origin for your own creation. What comes out of your mouth produces light or darkness.
To walk in the light is to walk with God; to walk according to God’s word. This walking must be constant and progressive; as we walk in the Light we become more like Christ and we have fellowship one with another. John reveals a gracious benefit of walking in the Light. As we walk with Jesus, in His light, we enjoy communion with Him. His light reveals areas in our lives that need attention. While living in darkness we may not have noticed, but now in the light they are abundantly clear.
Walking in the light is a daily consciousness. We must continually have fellowship with Jesus in the light in order to fill up our spiritual tanks. By doing this, we will be guided by the Holy Spirit rather than our own thoughts and feelings which in their default setting is probably sinful. Walking in the light is not a once in a while thing. Walking in the light is not a Sunday or Wednesday-only thing. Walking in the light is a daily way of life and it's a daily choice.
