And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. 1 Sam 3:1 KJV
God's desire is to draw us close, but most times we remove ourselves from Him. We can’t hear or understand His voice when we for whatever excuse that we concoct fail to worship Him or revere His Word. God speaks, but we hear only when we are tuned to His voice.
If you’re going to hear God’s voice & know how to respond to Him, you’ve got to be in the same room as He is. That’s why Church attendance is very critical; God could speak to you through your Pastor. Jesus said: "Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of you." Another, but no less critical activity that places you "in the same room, is "Prayer". I’m not just talking about emergency prayers but a "sit down and spend time with God" type of prayer.
When you feel a call or an urging or a nudge, seek out the counsel of someone you trust (your pastor preferably), someone who might be able to help you interpret what’s going on. Samuel went to Eli (James 5:13-15). I love the way God keeps coming back to Samuel in this passage. Four times God came and called Samuel’s name before Samuel finally got it. God is remarkably loving and patient. If you approach the Bible with a sincere and listening heart, God will speak to you through His word. You may not get it all the first time, but He keeps coming back.
